Port Harcourt agog for NPFL second round

Nigeria Professional Football League

The second round of the Nigeria Professional Football League commences on Saturday following a 5-week break with a game at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Rivers United occupy 13th place on the table and will need to win the game by at least a three-goal margin to have any chances of temporarily breaking into the top half, a spot below opponents, Nasarawa United in 9th place.

The game was initially scheduled for Sunday, but had to be played a day earlier due to Rivers United's midweek CAF Confederation Cup home tie against FUS Rabat.

Coach Stanley Eguma's team haven't been totally invincible at home this season, winning six and drawing three of the nine home games played in the first round of the league.

Coincidentally, all three drawn games were against teams from the North-Lobi Stars, Kano Pillars and Plateau United, hence Rivers United need to be wary of the potential danger posed by Nasarawa United, a team from the north central region.

Both sides made some key signings during the midseason transfer window, but Rivers United were the busier of both teams, recruiting some household names in the league.

It will be interesting to see if John Odimegwu, who netted on his debut for the club away in Rades last weekend in the CAF Confederation Cup gets the nod ahead of Guy Kuemian in attack, while Ayo Saka could potentially disposes either of the duo of Nzube Anaezemba or Yusuf Jaiyeola in midfield.

Abdulrahman Bashir, a highly experienced forward could be the danger man for Nasarawa United, while Rivers United duo of Ifeanyi Nweke and Esosa Igbinoba will be keen on getting a win over a team they both featured for last season.

Games between both teams have all ended in lone goal win's in favour of the home side and it could be a fourth successive score line and outcome at the end of the match.
