Nigeria wrap: Plateau edge closer to title

Supplied

Plateau United edged closer to the Nigerian Professional Football League title, while Remo Stars were officially relegated following a home defeat to Rivers United.

Plateau United 1 MFM FC 0
Plateau United have one hand on the league title after winning their top-of-the-table clash against MFM in Jos to open a six-point gap with four matches remaining. Ibeh Johnson scored the match-winning goal after just three minutes, while Daniel Itodo came close to adding a second when his bicycle-kick hit the woodwork.

Enugu Rangers 1 Sunshine Stars 0
Chibuzor Madu's 27th-minute penalty was all Rangers required to secure a much-needed home win against Sunshine Stars. Tope Olusesi was fouled in the area and Madu expertly tucked away the resultant effort as Rangers moved up to 13th place, two better than Stars, who remain in the relegation mix.

Remo Stars 1 Rivers United 3
Struggling Rivers managed their first away win of the season; in the process ensuring relegation for Stars, who are not winless in 10 games. Bernard Ovoke expertly bent in a free-kick on 15 minutes to hand the visitors the lead after which Emeka Ogbugh doubled the advantage. Esosa Igbinoba netted a third goal off a rebound, before Salefu Ochowechi pulled a goal back late on with a free-kick of his own.

Akwa United 3 Niger Tornadoes 0
Akwa - missing the service of four regulars who were away on international duty with Nigeria - were completely ruthless against Tornadoes as they maintained their faint title hopes. Cyril Olisema netted the opener in the 27th minute from the spot, before Gabriel Okechukwu and Edem Akakatang made sure of the points.

Enyimba 3 ABS FC 0
Another side clinging to hope in the title race, Enyimba were ruthless at home against ABS, led by the impressive Ikechukwu Ibenegbu, who set up two of the goals. The People's Elephant took the lead when Stanley Dimgba headed in Ibenegbu's free-kick on 16 minutes, and Eric Frimpong followed suit on the stroke of halftime. Ibrahim Mustapha capped off a brilliant day by netting the third goal via a Stephen Chukwude assist to secure a win for Enyimba which keeps them in fourth place, eight behind Plateau.

Abia Warriors 2 Shooting Stars 0
Abia Warriors secured successive league victories for only the second time this season, winning 2-0 to push Stars into the relegation zone. Ndifreke Effiong and an Alaba Osawe own-goal were all Abia Warriors required to move up to 10th spot.

Gombe United 1 Kano Pillars 0
Gombe United secured a first win in five attempts against a largely inconsistent Kano Pillars team on Sunday, but the result did little to improve their league position as they remain 19th - four points from safety. Ibrahim Abdullahi smashed in a free-kick in the 51st-minute to score the game's only goal.
