Title hopefuls MFM FC kept their championship dreams alive with a narrow home win over FC Ifeanyi Ubah in NPFL action this weekend, while Enugu Rangers required a late goal to salvage a point at home against Nasarawa United.

Elsewhere, struggling Remo Stars earned a win at home against Gombe United, but remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

In this feature, KweséESPN run down the weekend's action in the Nigerian top flight.

ABS FC 2- 1 Niger Tornadoes

Mohammed Mohammed's superb first-half goal was the highlight of the North-central Derby in Ilorin, when he fired the home side into the lead in the 18th minute with an excellent volley, connecting expertly with Adesina Gata's cross.

Tornadoes were awarded a penalty when Samuel Agba was brought down in the ABS FC penalty area, and Abdullahi Wakili converted his strike to level the scores before the break.

The home team had their own penalty claims turned down by the referee in the 64th minute, but Martin Ossy jabbed in the second goal from close range in the 83rd minute for the mid-table side.

Enugu Rangers 1 - 1 Nasarawa United

Fallen heavyweights Enugu Rangers endured another disappointing home result, when Nasarawa United forced a draw against the strugglers.

Ousmane Pape Sane salvaged a late draw for the Flying Antelopes, but his effort couldn't mask a disappointing result that keeps them just a spot above the drop zone.

Godwin Aguda should have put the home team ahead just after the half hour mark, but the attacking midfielder headed over from six yards out.

The opening goal eventually arrived with 15 minutes of game time left to play as the away side broke the deadlock.

Thomas Zenke silenced the home crowd with a fine finish via an assist from Adamu Hassan, before Sane drew the champions level five minutes later to ensure the points were shared.

Enyimba 1 - 0 Plateau United

Andrew Abalogu's scorching 20-yard strike proved to be the match-winner for Enyimba against Plateau United in a well contested bout played by two adventurous sides.

Enyimba almost went ahead in the fourth minute as Ifeanyi Anaemena headed Ikechukwu Ibenegbu's free kick a few inches over the bar, but Plateau United were next to threaten as Hamzat Owolabi forced Fatau Dauda into a great save.

Ibenegbu was next to test the goalkeeper but his free kick was superbly tipped over the bar by Dele Ajiboye, before Enyimba's Mfon Udoh inexplicably flicked Ibenegbu's reverse pass over from four yards out.

The deadlock was broken when Abalogu unleashed a thunderous effort from range which beat Ajiboye, who still managed to get a hand to the ball.

Despite the loss, Plateau United maintain the lead at the top of the table, while Enyimba move into fifth.

Kano Pillars 2 - 1 Lobi Stars

Kano Pillars earned a rare win, just their ninth of the season, as they defeated Lobi Stars to move into 12th.

Coming into the game, Lobi Stars had the best defensive record in the league with 11 clean sheets, but Nyima Nwangwa netted a brace for Kano Pillars against the club he left midway through the campaign.

It was actually Nwangwa's third goal of the season, the others coming in the colours of his weekend's opponents.

Nwangwa put Pillars ahead in the 36th minute via an assist from Rabiu Ali, but Denis Nya almost levelled scores for the visitors but his 30-yard free kick went just wide.

Nwangwa completed his brace in the 49th minute after Kabir Balogun laid on the assist.

Uchenna Eze pulled a goal back for the visitors with five minutes left to play, but it wasn't enough to ignite a fightback as Pillars held on for a home, win while Lobi Stars drop to seven.

MFM FC 1 - 0 FC Ifeanyi Ubah

Adebayor Waheed's 19th-minute goal clinched maximum points for MFM FC against FC Ifeanyi Ubah in the outstanding fixture of the round.

The youngster, who is having a breakthrough season following his goalscoring debut in the early weeks of the league, proved to be the matchwinner for the Lagos team as they move up to second.

Stephen Odey, fresh from making his international bow for Nigeria only a couple of days ago, almost doubled the lead in the 57th minute but his shot was deflected out for a corner.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah, despite the defeat, remain fourth on the log, and could have snatched a late leveller in the 89th minute as Seka Pascal went close, with his shot from close range saved comfortably by goalkeeper Abayomi Folarin.

Remo Stars 2 - 0 Gombe United

Remo Stars remain rooted to the bottom of the table despite earning a first win in six league games at home against Gombe United on Sunday.

The clash of the struggling promoted sides was always going to be interesting, although the bookmakers favoured a Remo home win due to Gombe's poor away record.

Quickfire goals from Salefu Oche and Ekene Awazie in the 10th and 16th minutes handed Stars a long-overdue win which will gladden the hearts of the supporters and club sponsors.

The loss drops United down to 18th in the table, and with just seven wins all season, the northern team will do well to avoid a second successive relegation from the top flight.

Shooting Stars 1 - 0 Sunshine Stars

Shooting Stars of Ibadan claimed a controversial home win against Sunshine Stars of Akure in the South-west Derby on Sunday, a win which sees the visitors drop to 17th.

Sunshine Stars may feel hard done by after having an apparently good goal by Ebitimi Agogu ruled out for offside, and their woe was doubled when Ibrahim Ajani put the home side ahead in the seventh minute, scoring against his former team.

Wasiu Jimoh, making his first appearance on his second return to the Ibadan side, should have extended Sunshine Stars' lead in the 59th minute but shot wide.

Speaking to Brila FM after the match, Sunshine Stars coach Austine Eguavoen expressed his disappointment at the referee, but refused to condemn the officials.
