Stephen Odey hits double figures as MFM defeat NPFL leaders Plateau 2-1

Another thrilling week of NPFL action is in the books, with Enyimba captain Mfon Udoh striking in a 1-1 draw against ABS.

League leaders Plateau United against third-placed MFM FC was the highlight of a superb weekend of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matches and there were milestones aplenty on the day, as Nigeria football federation president Amaju Pinnick -- who was just elected to the CAF executive committee, becoming only the third Nigerian to be so elevated -- was at the grounds. Accompanying him were his two vice presidents, one of whom is chairman of the league organising body, and a posse of other...

El Kanemi reach home field milestone, Ubong Friday continues Akwa's revival

Plateau United vs. Kano Pillars in Nigerian Premier League
Plateau United kept their perch atop the Nigerian Premier League with an impressive 2-0 win over traditional power Kano Pillars.

ESPN FC correspondent Colin Udoh recaps the week that was in the Nigerian Premier League.

El Kanemi win 20th straight at home

For nearly 12 years, Kano Pillars proved invincible at their home ground, turning the edifice into a fortress where losing was unthinkable.

That record is unlikely to be matched any time soon, but this weekend, El Kanemi Warriors achieved a milestone that should leave even Pillars envious: they recorded their 20th consecutive win on home soil when they beat Niger Tornadoes...

Ikhana proves his magic touch with tactical switch, guides Kano to victory

Kano Pillars ran out 3-1 winners in a sellout against Enyimba to cap this weekend in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

After Sikiru Olatunbosun's viral goal won CNN Goal of the Week, expectations were naturally elevated going into the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) weekend.

There was no wonder-goal repeat, but there was plenty of action to get hearts racing. Here are a few notes from the weekend:

Kano fans reclaim acclaim vs. Enyimba

Almost as if they felt insulted at being upstaged by Rangers last season, Kano fans are turning up in numbers to reclaim their spot as the city with the highest turnout...

Sikiru Olatunbosun almost breaks the internet with stunning goal for MFM FC

For anyone with doubts about the quality of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), the last few rounds of matches would have gone a long way towards laying them to rest. The most recent fixtures in particular served up some of the best fare that Nigerian football has to offer, so much so that one goal even went viral.

But there was more. Here are our three observations from this past weekend:

El Kanemi Warriors stun Abia, push Okey Emordi to resign as manager

El Kanemi Warriors' (in yellow) 1-0 win saw opposition manager Okey Emordi resign from his position at Abia United.

Missed penalties, applauded away teams and coaching resignations: all part of a weekend of football in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) that saw four clubs feature in continental action and miss out on domestic play.

If there were any expectations of a calm series of fixtures due to the reduced number of domestic games, they were rudely put to bed by Sunday evening.

Akwa United found some joy in faraway Gombe, where they drew 0-0. Nasarawa United missed a win by whiskers in a 1-1...
