Cvitanich asked to explain exit talk

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere has challenged striker Dario Cvitanich to explain his recent media outburst in which the Argentine claimed the Ligue 1 club had not kept its promises.

Dario Cvitanich is proving to be the bargain of the season in Ligue 1
Dario Cvitanich's words have angered Jean-Pierre Rivere

In an interview published in L'Equipe last Friday, Cvitanich, 29, stated that the club he joined last summer had received "important offers" for him.

He also insisted his priority was to remain with the side he scored 19 goals for last season as Nice claimed a surprise fourth place in Ligue 1, but the former Ajax man added: "When the other party doesn't keep its promises, it's difficult not to get annoyed.”

Rivere, however, was reported by L'Equipe on Thursday as saying: "He [Cvitanich] speaks of promises, but I would like him to explain them. He's playing us a tune, and his agent is telling us he has offers from other clubs, but we've seen nothing come our way."

Cvitanich, who is under contract until 2015, is believed to be hoping for a contract extension and a pay rise, but with a French court having ruled the club must pay former coach and sporting director Eric Roy €689,000 following his sacking a year ago, Rivere is tightening his purse strings.

"We have sums allocated for what we want to do, and when you have a sum like that one, which wasn't included in our budget, you've got some missing," he told Nice Matin, before adding that although key centre-back Renato Civelli has left the club this summer, neither Cvitanich nor captain Didier Digard would be allowed to go easily ahead of next season's Europa League campaign.

"Civelli, we made him offers, we gave what we could, he left and is finding it hard to find another club,” he said. “But the other two players are here, with a contract and a club which will have something to say about it."
