Bautheac to spurn Newcastle move

Newcastle United target Eric Bautheac has said he will turn down the chance to move to England or elsewhere this summer if Nice want to keep him.

Cherry-picked from relegated Dijon last summer, Bautheac, 25, has made a key contribution as coach Claude Puel has turned Nice from perennial strugglers into top-four challengers. His form has unsurprisingly caught the eye of a number of rival clubs both within Ligue 1 and elsewhere.

The talented left-winger told lequipe.fr the lure of playing in Nice's brand-new Allianz Riviera stadium next season is too strong to resist, however, though admitted his bosses on the Mediterranean coast may want to cash in on him this summer.

"Of course it's flattering that clubs like Newcastle, Marseille and Lazio are following me, but I signed a three-year contract with Nice," Bautheac, who has supplied seven league goals and as many assists this season, said. "I really want to play in the new stadium. So I'm going to do all I can to stay here next year. But we'll have to see what the club wants."
