Having finished third last season - their highest placing in the Premier League era - City are expected to be even stronger this time around with Sergio Aguero and Gael Clichy among the players to have already signed.

Roberto Mancini is still hopeful Samir Nasri will join from Arsenal before the end of the month and Richards feels the new-look squad could end the season as champions.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "The title is possible, definitely. I do believe we're title challengers.

"United are obviously a very good team and there's Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs. I do believe on our day we can beat anyone so why can't we win the title?

"I don't think there's an extra pressure. People look at our team and our squad and know that we're challengers. That can only be good for the club that people are starting to take us seriously. I wouldn't say there is added pressure. We're relishing it."

Newly-promoted Swansea visit the Etihad Stadium on Monday night and City will be expected to begin the season with all three points against a side tipped to battle relegation, but Mancini has warned his players there is no room for complacency.

"If you want to win a league, you need to beat the small teams first," Mancini said. "You only win the league if you win the games you are expected to win."
