Stekelenburg, 28, had only one year remaining on his Ajax deal and has signed a four-year contract at the Rome club.

A statement on the Roma website read: ''The A. S. Rome S.p.A. announces that it has signed a contract with ACF Ajax NV, for outright acquisition of the rights of the player Maarten Stekelenburg.''

''The Player has reached an agreement last for four years with effect the date of issue and expire on June 30, 2015, which provides for the recognition of a fixed fee, equivalent to 2.7 million gross for the duration of each sports season''

Stekelenburg had earlier admitted he was looking forward to the move, after spending his entire career in Holland.

"Finally the deal is done," he said on the website of his management agency Sport-Promotion. "This club is breathing football, in all aspects. I did not have time yet to see the stadium, but I've already seen the training complex, which looks good. All facilities are there, everything is optimal, all beautiful."
