Tottenham assistant manager Joe Jordan is hoping Jermain Defoe will shake off a groin complaint in time to face Manchester City in the Premier League curtain raiser on Saturday.

Defoe was left out of Saturday's pre-season friendly against Fiorentina and as a result was unavailable for selection in Fabio Capello's first post-World Cup England squad.

But Jordan believes Defoe should be fit to take his place in the Spurs team at the weekend.

"I don't think it is anything serious,'' Jordan said. "Jermain went for a scan and there is an ever so slight tear there. It is more precaution than anything. I think he should be all right.

"We have had to hold him back. He was desperate to train in the latter part of last week but he was pulled out. We are hoping that some time this week he will be back in training with the lads.''

Meanwhile, Roman Pavlyuchenko has said he is not distracted by interest from Spartak Moscow.

"I know that Spartak is really interested in me and as their former player it's very pleasant," he told Sport Express. "However, there is nothing to comment on now, because I am Tottenham player. I am preparing for the season in my team and I am focused on my work."
