Newcastle striker Mark Viduka could return to play a part in the club's fight for Premier League survival at Tottenham on Sunday.

GettyImagesViduka has been out of contract since leaving Newcastle in the summer.

The 33-year-old Australia international is back in full training after a long-standing Achilles problem and will travel with the rest of the party when they head south from Tyneside.

Manager Alan Shearer said: ''Mark Viduka has trained for the majority of the week and will travel with us. He has trained well.

''He's obviously got a huge amount of talent and we believe if we can keep him fit, then he will play a big part in helping us.''

Shearer is hoping for further good news on the injury front with defender Steven Taylor due to resume full training and midfielder Joey Barton hoping to do the same next week to put himself in contention for the home clash with Portsmouth.

Assistant Iain Dowie denied Joey Barton's recovery from injury has been hit by a setback, telling the club's official website: "There has been a suggestion that Joey has had a setback somewhere, but that isn't the case. Everything is fine with him and his recovery is on schedule as far as we're all concerned.

"He desperately wants to get back playing again and we are all looking at the Portsmouth game at the moment for him to do that.

"If that comes round a little too soon for him, then it will be the game after that. We'll have to see how he goes over the next week or so, but he is very determined, as you would imagine.

"That's the sort of character he is and hopefully he can play some part in that game."

Striker Obafemi Martins remains a doubt with a groin problem, while full-back Jose Enrique is struggling to make the game with the knee injury which kept him out of last Saturday's 1-1 draw at Stoke.
