City sign gold medal-winner Zabaleta

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes was tonight celebrating a double transfer swoop after his side's Barclays Premier League victory at Sunderland.

City confirmed they have signed 23-year-old Argentinian Olympic goal medalist Pablo Zabaleta in a £6.45million switch from Espanyol, and completed a short-term deal for Nurnberg's Brazilian defender Glauber Berti, 25.

Hughes said: 'Zabaleta has come in. He is a very, very good player. We are delighted that he has chosen us before some of the top clubs in Europe.

'There was a lot of interest in him, but we made our pitch and he understood what we are trying to do at the club.

'He will add to the many good players I already have at the club.

'Glauber Berti is a different situation, really. He hasn't played a great deal of football and it is an opportunity for him to see if he can grasp it.

'We are going to have a look at him. It is a short-term deal for 12 months and it is up to the lad really.'

Meanwhile, Hughes admitted he was awaiting developments in Tottenham's pursuit of Croatian defender Vedran Corluka.

He said: 'At the moment, there is a lot of interest from Spurs. It's not resolved in one way or the other at the moment.

'Those things need to be resolved and come to a conclusion. At the end of the day, we are still trying to build the club, trying to bring good players to the club who will make us better.

'I need an update, in fairness, I need to speak to people in and around the club. Things may well have happened today.

'If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen.'
