Santa Cruz ready to 'pay back' Blackburn

Roque Santa Cruz committed his future to Blackburn because he felt compelled to 'pay back' the club for the faith they showed in him.

The Paraguay international had been the subject of firm interest from other clubs this summer after an impressive debut season in the Barclays Premier League, with Manchester City lodging an unsuccessful bid to take him to Eastlands.

But Santa Cruz last week signed a new four-year deal to demonstrate his commitment to Rovers and revealed he felt the need to demonstrate his loyalty to the club after they signed him from Bayern Munich a year ago despite a history of serious knee injuries.

The 27-year-old told the Daily Mail: 'People sometimes say when you are in a good position, you need to go to a better team.

'But I have something to pay back to the club. When the club have done something good for you, you have to be aware of it and do something good for the club.

'They offered me the chance to become a better player. That's why I came here in the first place, and that's also the reason why I signed a new deal.'
