Monaco complete deal for Bordeaux's Alonso

July 30, 2008

Monaco have confirmed the signing of Alejandro Alonso from Bordeaux on a three-year deal.

The two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for the 26-year-old earlier in the week and officially announced the transfer after the player passed a medical on Wednesday evening.

Alonso revealed he was enthusiastic about reuniting with Monaco coach Ricardo Gomes, who was in charge at Bordeaux between 2005 and 2007.

'The presence of Ricardo, who was my coach for two years at Bordeaux, was an important factor in my decision,' he said.

'I arrive here determined to work hard, progress and be an important part of the team.

'Monaco is an important place for me. In Argentina it is more respected than Bordeaux and I hope here I can make a claim for a place in the national team.

'I spoke to (fellow Argentinians) Leandro Cufre and Lucas Bernardi (who are also at Monaco) and they spoke highly of the club. Their presence will help me adapt quickly.'

Alonso added: 'I know the club and supporters expect a lot of me and I won't disappoint them.'

The right-midfielder was in and out of Bordeaux's starting XI last season, his third with the club.

Les Girondins signed him from Atletico Huracan in 2005.
