Singapore league to welcome overseas team - report

November 9, 2006

SINGAPORE, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Singapore soccer's domestic S-League is to expand from 11 to 12 teams with the new side likely to be from overseas, local media reported on Thursday.

An Indonesian team, a Chinese team and one from South Korea are all in the frame to join the Singaporean league, the Straits Times reported.

If the 12th club is foreign-based, it would join Sporting Afrique and Japanese side Albirex Niigata as foreign-based or foreign-inspired.

Albirex is a feeder team for a Japanese club while Sporting only play players of African origin.

The last time the league had 12 teams was in 2003.
