Rangers rocked as Burke is ruled out until Christmas

September 27, 2006

Rangers have been rocked by the news Chris Burke will be out of action until Christmas.

The 22-year-old Ibrox winger needs an operation after damaging the ligaments in his left shoulder during a challenge with Aiden McGeady during the defeat at Celtic on Saturday.

The Scotland international will have surgery on Friday and is expected to be sidelined for 12 weeks.

That means he will miss in the entire UEFA Cup group stages, should Rangers qualify by beating Molde at Ibrox tomorrow night.

The news will come as a crushing blow to the youngster, who has already missed a chunk of the campaign through injury.

He damaged his ankle on the pre-season trip to South Africa, meaning he was ruled out of the opening games of the season.

Burke then picked up another ankle knock in a challenge with Fernando Ricksen during a friendly against Zenit St Petersburg.

The latest setback comes as the player, who is out of contract at the end of the season, attempts to thrash out a new deal to keep him at Rangers for the long term.

Manager Paul Le Guen admits the pacy winger will be a big loss.

He said: 'Burkey is injured and cannot play so I have to change the team again. I would like to have more stability, but I cannot have that at the moment.'
