England set to face Andorra without Rio

August 31, 2006

Rio Ferdinand's chances of playing for England in Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Andorra appear to be diminishing.

Ferdinand failed to join his England team-mates again for this morning's training session and is not expected to take part in the second session of the day at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United defender is nursing a bruised toe which he suffered in last weekend's win at Watford. He worked alone with England's physio Gary Lewin today.

England boss Steve McClaren wants to make sure Ferdinand is fit for the trickier fixture away to Macedonia on Wednesday rather than Saturday's clash with Andorra.

The minnows are ranked 132nd in the world and should not provide a test for England's defence, even if it is weakened.

With Jamie Carragher and Ledley King both injured, McClaren must choose between Wes Brown and Michael Dawson if Ferdinand fails in his race to be fit.
