Wigan Athletic defender Emmerson Boyce has called upon his team-mates to improve their starts to games to ensure the club's current season is not a repeat of the last.

Wigan escaped relegation in May by winning seven of their last nine games but Roberto Martinez's men have failed to maintain that form in the current campaign.

They have only taken one point from their last five games and Boyce, 33, was annoyed at the way his side played in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Swansea.

"We had to go 2-0 down before we started playing," Boyce said. "Already this season there's been too many times when we've done that.

Wigan have also fallen 2-0 down to Chelsea and Fulham this season, losing both games despite a major improvement in their performance after conceding.

"It's the same as last season when we only started playing when we had to," Boyce said.

"We have to change that because we can't be in a position like we were at the end of last season and all the other seasons.

"At this level, it's ourselves we have to blame. When you give a team a two-goal lead then it's always going to be hard to pull it back.

"We have to start playing like we finished today and we played at the end of last season - but we have to do that from the first whistle. We must get on the front foot."
