Anzhi Makhachkala moved to the top of the Russian Premier League with a 2-1 win over Volga Nizhny Novgorod to leapfrog 10-man CSKA Moscow who went down to local rivals Dinamo Moscow.
Samuel Eto'o scored on the stroke of half-time to put Anzhi ahead although they were pegged back by Ilya Maksimov's equaliser just before the hour. However, parity lasted just three minutes with Lacina Traore's 62nd-minute strike proving to be the winner.
Former leaders CSKA would have expected to beat neighbours Dinamo who were third bottom at the start of play.
However, goals by Balazs Dzsudzsak (38) and Aleksandr Kokorin (51) gave the visitors a 2-0 victory with the hosts' misery compounded by the dismissal after 58 minutes of Russia international Alan Dzagoev.
Rubin Kazan moved up to sixth with a 4-0 victory at struggling Rostov, the hosts also finishing with 10 men. Goals after 17 and 31 minutes by Jose Salomon Rondon put the visitors in a strong position at half-time with Rostov's task exacerbated with the sending off of Kornel Salata after 58 minutes.
Late goals by Salvatore Bocchetti (81) and substitute Vladimir Dyadyun (90) wrapped up an emphatic victory.
