Reports in Catalonia suggested the La Liga champions wanted to take the former Atletico Madrid striker back to Spain, but club vice-president Josep Bartmoeu insisted they had not approached the Argentina international, who is a close friend of Lionel Messi, and were not planning to recruit him.

"No, we have had no contact with him," he told Mundo Deportivo. "I can say that the story is not true."

Aguero, who joined City in 2011 and is their 16-goal top scorer this season, has also been linked with Real Madrid.

Speaking on Sunday, City manager Manuel Pellegrini said he was unaware of any contact between the clubs and believed the 25-year-old was keen to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

He said: "I don't know anything about that. I don't think Sergio wants to leave. That is not a problem for us. I don't believe in that."
