West Bromwich Albion’s Jonas Olsson has welcomed the arrival of fellow defender Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Germain and hopes more new signings are on their way to The Hawthorns.

Subject to international clearance being obtained, Lugano may make his first Baggies appearance when Albion play their penultimate pre-season friendly away to Cork City on Tuesday.

And Olsson says he is ready for the greater competition for first-team places as he believes the club need more strength in depth.

“We need to strengthen in most parts of the team. The squad is not big enough for an entire season, so I welcome more players coming here,” he said.

“The competition is something that makes you try harder. Before every season, it’s good to have a few new faces and competition develops you as a team. It’s vital and hopefully we can get a few more in.

“Nico [Nicolas Anelka, who was signed last month] is motivated and a quality player. I know his CV, which is brilliant, and he can be a good addition to our team. With him here, hopefully we can sign more of his standard.

“We were lacking a bit of experience when I signed here. We have a lot of experienced players in the team now and the club have shown ambition by giving Gareth McAuley and Steven Reid new contracts.”

Olsson has been linked with an Albion exit for the last 12 months, but he insists he is ready to do well at a club with whom he is about to start a sixth season.

It was thought he may have sought a fresh challenge after playing for Sweden in Euro 2012, however, he still finds himself at The Hawthorns with the World Cup looming next summer.

“I’m very much motivated to do well and feel I can develop myself,” he said. “I think my best seasons are ahead of me. I feel I have progressed every season.

“There are [nearly] two weeks to go before the fun bit starts. We know what we are striving for. When the game comes, you embrace them. Everything is fresh and possible for the new season.”
