After Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso and Santos striker Christian Suarez had swapped first half-goals, Sami Khedira got a somewhat fortunate winner to seal the win for a Real side with all their Euro 2012 stars back in action.

Turkish midfielder Nuri Sahin - linked with a loan move to Premier League side Arsenal - was surprisingly deployed out of position at left-back in the second half.

Afterwards, Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka said the game had been a useful workout as his side prepare to begin the defence of the Spanish title against Valencia on Aug 19 and then face main rivals Barcelona over two legs in the Spanish Supercopa before the end of the month.

"It was a demanding game against physical opponents," Karanka said. "There are still games to play and training to do. The most important thing is that this team has the ambition to win. We feel that the players want to keep winning."
