Newcastle agree to loan deal for Chelsea's Christian Atsu - sources

Newcastle have agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign winger Christian Atsu on loan, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.

As reported by ESPN FC last week Newcastle had lined up a move for Atsu as they looked to bolster their attacking options before the close of the transfer window.

The two clubs have now agreed a season-long loan deal for the Ghana international with a view to a permanent deal, and the player has been given permission to travel to Tyneside to undergo a medical.

Atsu, who joined Chelsea from Porto in 2013, has spent the past three seasons out on loan after seeing his first-team chances limited at Stamford Bridge.

The 24-year-old has endured frustrating spells out on loan at Everton and Bournemouth and he will hope to get more first-team action at Newcastle.

Chelsea are willing to send Atsu out on loan again with the skilful attacker well down the pecking order in Antonio Conte's plans at Stamford Bridge. And Newcastle have moved quickly to agree a deal for the winger as Rafa Benitez looks to build a squad capable of winning promotion back to the Premier League.
