Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez poised for talks over his future

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez said he would hold talks with chief executive Lee Charnley and potentially also owner Mike Ashley this week in a bid to resolve his future.

Benitez, who was unable to keep the club in the Premier League after joining on a short-term deal, saw his side demolish Tottenham 5-1 on the final day of the season.

St James' Park rang out with chants from fans calling for the manager to stay, and he said the rapturous reception would make it harder for him to walk away.

"I was expecting the fans to get behind the team and support me, but it has been amazing," he added. "I was open to talk, and now I am more open to talk.

"It is not easy to leave a club like this, and I will talk and analyse and try to do the best for me and the best for Newcastle United. It has got to be the best for both."

Benitez said he had yet to speak to Ashley, despite the owner making a rare appearance in the directors' box for one of his side's best performances of the season.

"We knew when we played without fear we could do this," the Spaniard added. "Today we scored five goals and it could have been even better.

"We are really disappointed because we couldn't stay up, but really happy that we gave the fans something to enjoy today.

"Since I've been here, in terms of effort and hard work you can say nothing [negative] about these players."
