Newcastle face goalkeeper shortage as Rob Elliot suffers injury setback

Steve McClaren could bring in a goalkeeper on an emergency loan after Rob Elliot aggravated a thigh problem in Newcastle's 0-0 home draw with Stoke on Saturday.

McClaren, who is already without the injured Tim Krul and Karl Darlow, now has only teenager Freddie Woodman as his sole fully-fit keeper.

"Rob took a fitness test before [Stoke] and said he wanted to play," he told a news conference.

"He just got through, but he was wincing at the end and is a major doubt for next week."

"We are certainly looking at the situation and seeing what we can do because that's obviously three of our senior goalkeepers injured."

McClaren was left frustrated by Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland, who made a string of good saves to earn his side a point at St James' Park.

His display means Newcastle still have only one league win this season and remain in the relegation zone.

But McClaren said he believed the Magpies were improving, adding: "The key thing is that we look capable of winning games now.

"We are playing good football and dominating opponents. Anybody looking at that can see we're on the right way."
