Tim Krul says 'knackered' Newcastle will rest players in cup clash

Tim Krul has suggested Newcastle may have to abandon their new-found policy of targeting cup competitions by saying some of Steve McClaren's side will need to be rested for Tuesday's clash with Northampton.

Newcastle have not won a major trophy since 1969 and, as they have concentrated on the Premier League, have only reached one cup quarterfinal during Mike Ashley's reign as owner.

They have often been eliminated by lower-division sides while fielding weakened teams but Ashley told Sky Sports in May his aims were: "To definitely win something and, by the way, I won't be selling [the club] until I do."

But goalkeeper Krul believes Saturday's 0-0 draw against Manchester United took a lot out of McClaren's players and, with a clash against Arsenal next week, feels some of them should sit out the game against League Two side Northampton.

"You just have to manage it right because the way the boys put the effort in [at Old Trafford], it takes a lot out of you," he said.

"You just have to manage it right because if we want to do the same on Saturday... And I think the manager will know -- a few of the boys in there are absolutely knackered. And that is what it is all about. But we definitely are pushing for a good cup run, yes."
