Patrick Vieira a contender for Newcastle manager job - reports

Patrick Vieira is a target of Newcastle United to become the club's next manager, according to reports.

Vieira is currently head of the elite development squad at Manchester City and is close to completing his pro licence qualification as part of his development as a coach, according to The Guardian. However, the 38-year-old's contract at the club expires this summer, leaving him free to discuss potential new roles at other clubs.

Newcastle are seeking a new boss after John Carver's time in charge came to an end following their Premier League survival on the final day of the season.

Former Arsenal midfielder Vieira is a contender for the vacant position, reports the Daily Telegraph, as is Steve McClaren after he left Derby last month.

The Daily Mirror claims Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is hopeful of having a manager in place by the end of this week, with managing director Lee Charnley to hold talks with Vieira and McClaren.

Vieira, who has previously labelled St James' Park his favourite ground, said last week: "I'm happy with the way I am developing as a manager and a young coach.

"It's about the vision. I've been here for three years from the B licence to the pro licence and I really know myself. I really know which kind of manager I want to be.

"They don't try to put something in my head. It's about who I am as a person and how I see the game and how they can give me the tools to be a successful manager."
