Newcastle weren't good enough at Sunderland, says coach John Carver

Newcastle United coach John Carver pulled no punches after his side's fifth successive derby defeat to Sunderland.

The Magpies lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light thanks to Jermain Defoe's stunning first-half volley and Carver was in no mood to spare his players after they offered little in response.

"We were abysmal in the first half. We were poor," he told the BBC. "I always say a side of mine will give 100 percent, but we didn't.

"It was a world-class goal, and if we had gone in at halftime at 0-0 I would have been delighted. We were second best in every department -- it wasn't good enough.

"We were so negative. I want them to be exciting, but for whatever reason we were so negative out there. We weren't at the races but at least we had a go in the second half."

And he warned that Newcastle -- nine points above the relegation zone -- still had work to do, adding: "I am getting fed up with the question of our season being dead. We have 35 points and that might not be enough. We need to go and win some games."

He also defended goalkeeper Tim Krul for congratulating Defoe on his goal, saying: "If there's one guy who cares about this club, it's Tim Krul.

"We get slaughtered when we're not sportsmanlike, and when you see skill like that you have to accept it.

He said the defeat would "hurt for weeks, months and years until we beat them" and said his players "should do better than we did."
