Mathieu Debuchy has reiterated his desire to remain at Newcastle, while confirming his future at the club does not depend on good friend Yohan Cabaye staying on Tyneside.
Debuchy, a January signing from Lille, rubbished reports linking him with a move away from St James’ Park last week, adding that he is happy at the Magpies.
However, with the full-back a close friend of Cabaye’s from their days spent together at Lille, there has been talk that Monaco could strike up a deal to bring the pair to France.
Cabaye, it would seem, is open to a move away from the club after failing to dampen rumours of an exit and talking up a switch to Manchester United earlier this month.
“[United] are always well placed among the big clubs. Yes for sure it could be an interesting challenge,” he told Canal+.
Debuchy, though, was far clearer about his future, when talking to L’Equipe.
Asked if he would have joined Newcastle had Cabaye not been a member of the squad, he replied: “Yes. I wanted to play in England and Newcastle is a great club.”
