Newcastle bid accepted for Haidara

Newcastle have had a bid accepted for Nancy defender Massadio Haidara, but face a fight to sign the full-back who is holding out for a move to Serie A.

Haidara, 20, who made his Nancy debut as a teenager, has impressed with his displays for the struggling Lorraine side, currently bottom of Ligue 1.

Linked to a number of clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Haidara has also caught the eye of Newcastle, who have had a €2.5 million bid accepted, L'Equipe reports. The paper adds, however, that Haidara, who is under contract at Nancy until 2015, has not agreed personal terms with the Magpies.

Haidara, who was born in the Paris region into a family with Senegalese roots, has also been linked to a switch to Roma, and Tuttomercatoweb.it have reported him as saying this week that Serie A, rather than the Premier League, would be his preferred destination.

"I'd rather Roma than Newcastle, I like Italian football more,” he said. “I would like to play in Italy, but Newcastle are a good team too. My agent has spoken to both clubs, I'll see what happens, but I would like to play in Italy."

In a recent interview with RMC radio, Nancy vice-president Nicolas Holveck admitted Haidara was for sale, and suggested Newcastle are not the only ones interested.

"Our player with the highest market value is Massadio Haidara," Holveck said. "He's been playing in Ligue 1 for the last two years. He's particularly attractive to the English market. Today, we're in contact with five clubs in the top half of the table. We think it should be wrapped up quickly."
