Santon happy to stay put at Newcastle

Newcastle defender Davide Santon has reiterated his commitment to the club amid reported interest from Italian giants AC Milan.

Milan, who are reportedly looking to sell Ignazio Abate to Zenit St Petersburg, have targeted Santon, 22, as a potential replacement, with club owner Silvio Berlusconi recently revealing his admiration for the Magpies full back.

"We will build a team with young players who can help AC Milan to be a leader in Italy and in Europe,” he told Mediaset Sport. “Davide Santon and [Mattia] Destro? I gave my word to [Milan vice-president] Adriano Galliani I wouldn't reveal any names, but these are players we like."

However, any deal between the two clubs seems unlikely, with Santon having stated his happiness on Tyneside.

“I have had a year-and-a-half here, I really enjoy it,” he told the Evening Chronicle. “I am happy at the club [and] happy as a player. This is really important for a young player. We are a young team here and we are growing together. That will only make us stronger in the long-term.

“The team give me confidence to play my game. If you play when you are stressed you can’t give 100%. But when you are settled as a group you can do well. I know I can do better than now though. And when we have all of our players fit, we know we can do better as a team.”

Santon has played a total of 50 games for Newcastle since joining from Inter Milan last summer and has stated in the past how much he is enjoying life in the Premier League.
