Pardew targets one new signing

Alan Pardew has revealed Newcastle intend to add at least one new player to their squad during the January transfer window.

Pardew's Newcastle have struggled this season and find themselves just above the drop zone

Currently in 15th position in the Premier League, Newcastle have endured a difficult second full season under Pardew. As well as poor form on the pitch, the 51-year-old has been forced to deal with constant speculation over the future of star striker Demba Ba.

Pardew looked to allay fans' concerns over potential departures in the New Year by insisting that any player leaving the club in January will be promptly replaced.

“It is a difficult window, but I think we would like to get - definitely - one player in and not lose anybody," Pardew explained. "It could be that we lose a player, you never know. Obviously I lost Andy Carroll in this window and in a situation that wasn't too dissimilar to what I'm in now two years ago, maybe it was a bit better. But if that is the case then we need two players, and if we lose two then we need three."

The news follows reports that Marseille striker Loic Remy is in advanced talks with the club over a possible move next month. The France international is currently out of favour, with Newcastle believed to be keen to secure the former Nice player at a cost of £10 million plus midfielder Sylvain Marveaux. However, Remy would be ineligible to play in the Europa League having already played in the competition for Marseille.

Pardew feels the Magpies should have strengthened further in the summer, with the squad stretched to the limit by injuries and the demands of the Europa League.

"Myself, Mike [Ashley] and Derek [Llambias] all agree that we should have brought one more senior player in here," Pardew added. "For whatever reason it didn't happen. And we have learnt from that lesson, and that's what comes from the luxury which is the security of the owner. The owner has great faith in my ability and I have to reward that with what I think when we make an error, and say we have made a mistake."
