Jets' striker Heskey ruled out for 6 weeks

Newcastle Jets marquee striker Emile Heskey is set to miss the opening three rounds of the A-League season after injuring his knee in a trial match.

Scans have revealed Heskey suffered a grade two medial ligament strain in his left knee in Wednesday's pre-season clash with Melbourne Victory and will be sidelined for six weeks.

Heskey was assisted from the field at AAMI Park after a first-half tackle from defender Nick Ansell.

The Jets won the match 1-0.

The club said the former England international was a chance to return for the Jets' round-four derby with the Central Coast Mariners on November 2 at Hunter Stadium.

Meanwhile, forward Nathan Burns is awaiting the results of scans on his hamstring, which he strained while warming up for Wednesday's trial.

Burns did not play the match.

Newcastle kick off their 2013/2014 campaign against Sydney FC on October 11.
