New York Red Bulls name Denis Hamlett as sporting director

The New York Red Bulls have officially named Denis Hamlett as their news sporting director, a position he has already reportedly been filling for several weeks.

The Major League Soccer team announced the move on Tuesday, a week after Ali Curtis left the team after a difference of opinion with management.

Curtis left the MLS combine in January without explanation and did not attend the league's SuperDraft. Metro first reported that Hamlett has been performing Curtis' duties.

Hamlett will oversee all the team's operations, which includes player acquisitions, scouting and the soccer operations budget.

The Costa Rican has nearly 20 years of coaching experience, which includes the past two years with the Red Bulls as the top assistant coach. He previously was the head coach of the Chicago Fire from 2007-2008.

A second-round pick in the inaugural MLS Draft, Hamlett appeared in 31 games for the Colorado Rapids before retiring at the end of the 1996 season.
