Wesley Sneijder set for Netherlands swansong in friendly against Peru

Netherlands' upcoming friendly against Peru on Sept. 6 marks the end of a generation with Wesley Sneijder set to earn his 134th and final international cap.

The former Real Madrid and Inter Milan midfielder was named in Ronald Koeman's squad, and the ex-Everton boss confirmed Sneijder would start the match and play for an hour. He is the last remaining international player from a generation of talented Dutchmen, which included the likes of Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Dirk Kuyt.

That side's pinnacle was reaching the 2010 World Cup final, a spectacular year for Sneijder in particular who, as well as finishing a joint-top goal scorer at the summer's tournament, was also the star of the Inter side which won the Treble.

Ryan Babel, who was also part of that 23-man squad in South Africa but failed to make an appearance, is the last member from 2010 to be named in the squad.

At the other end of the spectrum, Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong, 21, is named in the squad for the first time. Netherlands also face France in their opening Nations League match Sept. 9.

Goalkeepers: Jasper Cillessen (Barcelona), Jeroen Zoet (PSV Eindhoven), Sergio Padt (Groningen)

Defenders: Patrick van Aanholt (Crystal Palace), Nathan Ake (Bournemouth), Daley Blind (Ajax), Matthijs de Ligt (Ajax), Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool), Daryl Janmaat (Watford), Kenny Tete (Lyon), Stefan de Vrij (Inter Milan)

Midfielders: Wesley Sneijder (Al-Gharafa), Donny van de Beek (Ajax), Davy Proepper (Brighton), Frenkie de Jong (Ajax), Marten de Roon (Atalanta), Kevin Strootman (Marseille), Tonny Vilhena (Feyenoord), Ruud Vormer (Club Brugge), Georginio Wijnaldum (Liverpool)

Forwards: Ryan Babel (Besiktas), Memphis Depay (Lyon), Luuk de Jong (PSV Eindhoven), Justin Kluivert (Roma), Quincy Promes (Sevilla)
