Netherlands want Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal - reports

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is being targeted by the Dutch football association (KNVB) for a senior role in Netherlands international setup this summer, according to British newspaper reports.

Van Gaal parted ways with Netherlands as their head coach in 2014 after leading the nation to third at the World Cup in Brazil to replace David Moyes at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman's future in his current role has been the subject of conjecture amid talk of the club targeting Jose Mourinho as his replacement.

Van Gaal's contract at United expires in 2017 but The Independent and the Daily Telegraph report that the KNVB is interested in appointing him as technical director of the country's new football centre of excellence, which is due to be completed this summer.

Netherlands have suffered a downturn in form since their showing at the 2014 World Cup, with the team missing out on qualification for Euro 2016.

Danny Blind is Netherlands' current boss and in December he said he would welcome linking back up with Van Gaal after they worked alongside one another in Brazil.

"With Van Gaal I could achieve a lot," Blind told Algemeen Dagblad.
