Netherlands fans booing Andres Iniesta shameful - Guus Hiddink

Netherlands manager Guus Hiddink has hit out at those fans who booed Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta on Tuesday.

Barcelona's Iniesta replaced Santi Cazorla in the 76th minute of Spain's 2-0 loss to Netherlands, and his introduction was met with vocal criticism from fans at the Amsterdam Arena.

The reception follows Iniesta's winning goal in extra time of the 2010 World Cup as he secured a 1-0 victory for the Spanish against the Dutch in Johannesburg.

Speaking after this week's result, Hiddink told reporters: "Such a player, such a world-class player. The fact that he was booed should make the crowd feel deeply ashamed."

When a reporter mentioned Iniesta's World Cup-winning goal, Hiddink sarcastically questioned the Spain star's right to score before adding: "He's a fantastic player and a great person. That was really inappropriate, and shameless."

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque added: "I have been on the Spain bench for 98 internationals, but I've never experienced anything like that before."

The Dutch were victorious thanks to early goals from Stefan de Vrij and Davy Klaassen, helping to relieve some of the pressure on manager Hiddink following the team's disappointing form since he took over from Louis van Gaal.
