Leroy Fer welcomes fines for racist reactions to photo of Dutch players

Netherlands midfielder Leroy Fer has welcomed news that Dutch prosecutors have fined three people for posting racist comments online in response to a photograph of nine members of the national team.

Fer, who plays for QPR, posted the picture on Instagram in November. Website Voetbalzone.nl then put it on its Facebook page, where it drew a stream of racist responses.

He welcomed the imposition of the 360 euro fines for racism, with the Associated Press quoting him as calling them "a clear signal to everybody that this kind of thing can't happen -- not on the field or off it."

Prosecutors had called for a criminal investigation after the racist comments were posted.

At the time, Fer told Dutch daily De Telegraaf he was shocked by the racist postings.

He said: "As a footballer you get monkey sounds from the stands in the former East Bloc. But what has happened now is far worse. It feels like those people are saying: 'You don't belong in the Dutch team.'"
