Gullit keen on Netherlands job

Ruud Gullit has confirmed he would relish the chance to succeed Bert van Marwijk as Netherlands boss.

Gullit, who has previously managed Chelsea, Newcastle, Feyenoord, LA Galaxy and Terek Grozny, has been tipped to take charge of the team following a dismal Euro 2012 campaign.

“I was so proud when I was captain of the Dutch side that won the European Championships, but being manager would be an ever prouder moment for me,” Gullit said. “It’s a job that I couldn’t turn down. I couldn’t turn down my country if they asked me to be manager.

“And yes, it is a job I would like to take. I know most of the players and it is most certainly something that interests me.”

Gullit was working as an analyst on Al Jazeera alongside Glenn Hoddle, who signed Gullit during his time as Chelsea manager.

ESPNFC columnist Hoddle says:  “Ruud was buoyant when we were discussing the Holland job. He is very keen to take it if it is offered to him.

“In my view he is a perfect fit for the national job. He would command the respect of the players. It would be a good time for him to take over with the team slumping in the European Championships, as the only way is up from here.”

Gullit led Netherlands to their only major tournament success as captain of the Euro 1988-winning team.
