Napoli president 'ashamed' of Stadio San Paolo; threatens to move club

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has branded his club's Stadio San Paolo "a dump" and called on the mayor of the Italian city to cooperate with his attempts to modernise the stadium, or else he will move the club away.

De Laurentiis has been discussing plans to take control of the city-owned stadium, which was last renovated in preparation for the 1990 World Cup.

He says an agreement was met with the mayor of Naples Luigi De Magistris many months ago, but nothing has happened since. Speaking prior to Napoli's Europa League trip to Legia Warsaw on Thursday, De Laurentiis has demanded action.

"I'm ashamed with our stadium in Fuorigrotta," he told Radio Kiss Kiss. "I ask myself what [De Magistris] thinks a serious project is, considering we shook hands on it in my office when we discussed an investment of €20 million in the San Paolo.

"I've followed up our verbal agreement with designs drawn up by the architect [Gino] Zavanella and a feasibility plan. It's absurd that the council's advisory panel still has to discuss it, considering that they are leaving me a dump to play in every fortnight.

"If I don't get temporary permission by the end of October, then I'm going to build a new stadium somewhere else. How am I expected to buy new players in January in these conditions? We are a serious, successful Napoli. I don't understand De Magistris."
