Rafa Benitez rues Napoli's many missed chances in Europa defeat

Napoli manager Rafa Benitez rued his side's missed chances and declined to blame the referee for their elimination from the Europa League.

Despite controlling 63 percent of possession on Thursday, Napoli are out of the competition after losing 1-0 in Ukraine to upstarts Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

"I think over the two legs we created enough chances to score the goals we needed," he told Sport Mediaset. "I am disappointed that after so much control and so many opportunities, a goal would've changed everything."

Gonzalo Higuain missed a golden chance to open the scoring in the opening 10 minutes after he was sent through by a superb pass from Gokhan Inler, but the Argentina striker hit a tame effort at Denys Boyko, who saved well to turn it behind.

It was only the first of multiple opportunities that left Benitez shaking his head after the 2-1 aggregate defeat.

"The team had the opportunities to score and didn't take them," Benitez said. "Of course Gonzalo Higuain is the centre forward and people look more to him for goals, but we all win and lose together.

"Obviously the squad was disappointed and we could've done better."

Dnipro goal scorer Yevhen Seleznyov headed home despite being tangled with Napoli defender Miguel Britos, with shouts from the Italian side of a shirt tug waved away.

In the first leg, Napoli had also complained that Dnipro's late goal should have been ruled out for offside, but Benitez said the decisions were not to blame for Napolo's ouster.

"It is serious, but we cannot change that," Benitez said. "We should've scored with the chances we had and that is all there is to it."

He continued: "We cannot change that now. I see it clearly, but we cannot change it. They are in the final and we are not.

"Aside from attacking the space, we could've done better between the lines in the first half. Dries Mertens is a different type of player who targets that space more, so it was an advantage in the second half, but we still didn't finish the chances.

"We saw Dnipro are an organised side, but that even then we had enough clear-cut chances over two legs to win it.

"We're talking about goals that should've been disallowed and could've changed everything, but the fact remains we should've scored and we didn't do well enough in front of goal."

A Europa League title would have given Napoli a lucrative spot in the Champions League group stage. With the club currently three points out of third in Serie A with three games to play, Benitez was asked if he thought Thursday's defeat would affect his position as manager.

"Right now we have to concentrate on the game with Cesena. I spoke to the president, I still have to talk to my family, but we have to focus on the important matches we still have," he said. "Will my decision only be made at the end of the season? I don't know. We'll see."
