Valentin Rongier signs new long-term deal with Nantes

Nantes have given a new long-term contract to injured midfielder Valentin Rongier.

The 21-year-old is recovering from a ruptured cruciate knee ligament and returned to training in January having suffered the injury in October.

That came in only his 16th Ligue 1 appearance, and a week after he scored his first goal for his formative club against Troyes.

The club have seen enough potential in a player who has been on their books since signing schoolboy terms in 2001 to extend his stay.

"It gives me great pleasure," he told the club's website. "I am injured and the club came to me to extend my contract -- it's a great gesture and a mark of confidence.

"The club want to build something strong and want me to be a part of it. That gives me strength to keep working."

Coach Michel Der Zakarian said: "The injury has held Valentin back this season but he is a player for the future. His contract extension is great news.

"He has great quality and mentally, he has shown his desire to return to the top level."
