MTN8: Chiefs fall, McCarthy bags first win

Kaizer Chiefs exited South Africa's MTN8 competition at the first hurdle after a 1-0 quarterfinal loss to SuperSport United, while Benni McCarthy led Cape Town City past Polokwane City on Saturday.

Chiefs coach Steve Komphela, under huge pressure this season after a barren campaign last term, has got off to the worst start in the 2017-18 season after his side crashed out of the top eight cup at the quarterfinal stage.

Despite dominating against SuperSport, it was Eric Tinkler's side that emerged victorious at Moses Mabhida Stadium thanks to an early Jeremy Brockie goal and a stubborn defensive display thereafter.

The Soweto side hit the woodwork three times in the match and also had a goal disallowed in stoppage time after Joseph Molangoane was flagged for offside in the build-up.

Earlier on Saturday, former FC Porto striker and Bafana Bafana international top scorer Benni McCarthy got his managerial career off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Polokwane City at Cape Town Stadium.

The Citizens, in only their second season as a new PSL club following a debut season in which they picked up the Telkom Knockout trophy, are chasing their first top eight cup.

They got their goal in fortuitous fashion following good pressure from a corner-kick as Polokwane defender Sibusiso Mbonani headed the ball over his own goalkeeper.

Veteran playmaker Teko Modise, City's marquee signing of the off-season, did not make his debut after picking up an injury during the warm-up.
