McCarthy admits dread ahead of greatest coaching triumph

Benni McCarthy admits feeling fear and dread, but has emerged with his first trophy as a head coach after securing the MTN8 title with Cape Town City on Saturday.

City defeated SuperSport United 4-1 on penalties after a goalless draw at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, a match in which the Mother City side dominated and should have wrapped up the result long before a shoot-out was needed.

It was also revenge for McCarthy and City after they were beaten on penalties by the same opposition, at the...

SuperSport United win at Kaizer Chiefs to reach MTN8 final

SuperSport United went away to Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday and won 1-0 in the second leg of the MTN8 semifinal at Soccer City to book a place in the final at the end of the month.

Bradley Grobler, who scored twice in the 2-2 draw in the first leg last Sunday, got the only goal of the return as SuperSport won 3-2 on aggregate and stayed on track to defend the title they won last year.

SuperSport could now face Cape Town City in a repeat of the 2017 final. City are 1-0 up against Mamelodi Sundowns going...

Billiat the hero for Chiefs in roller-coaster MTN8 semifinal

Khama Billiat scored one and provided an assist for the other as Kaizer Chiefs played to a 2-2 draw in their roller-coaster MTN8 semifinal, first leg against SuperSport United in Pretoria on Sunday.

Chiefs led early after the opener for the Zimbabwean, but were then forced to come from behind when a first-half double from SuperSport striker Bradley Grobler put the hosts ahead.

The return leg will be played at FNB Stadium next Saturday, with the winner to face either Cape Town City or Mamelodi Sundowns,...

Taariq Fielies on target as City edge Sundowns

Cape Town City claimed the 'halftime' advantage after a 1-0 victory over a weakened Mamelodi Sundowns in their MTN8 semifinal, first leg.

At a wet Cape Town Stadium on Saturday evening, defender Taariq Fielies blasted the ball home with 15 minutes remaining to hand Benni McCarthy's side a narrow victory, but with the away leg to come in Pretoria next Sunday, it is a tenuous lead.

This is especially so as a Sundowns side that had nine changes and a number of fringe players included...

Tasty MTN8 semifinals take centre stage

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane admits the MTN8 has provided something of a distraction in recent seasons as another cup campaign looms.

The Brazilians are preparing for the first leg of their semifinal away at Cape Town City on Saturday, but the coach has promised that from next year they will be able to give the competition full focus.

Sundowns have not lifted the first piece of silverware on offer in the South African season since 2007, while for Mosimane it has been...
