Herve Renard has unveiled Morocco's 23-man for the World Cup, with Southampton's Sofiane Boufal the most notable omission.

The squad was revealed by the Moroccan football federation on Thursday, with Medhi Benatia, Hakim Ziyech and Younes Belhanda the key names in a strong squad

24-year-old Boufal, who scored twice in 26 league outings for Saints this season, has been cut along with Zakaria Labyad, Yacine Bammou and Walid Azaro, after not starting a league game since February.

Renard has opted for a 23-man squad, with Oualid El Hajjam, uncapped Nouassir Mazraoui and Youssef En Nesyri named as three stand-by players.

Ayoub El Kaabi, who top-scored at the 2018 African Nations Championship before being handed his first senior call-up for the March friendlies, has been included in the squad and will compete with Khalid Boutaib to lead the line for the Atlas Lions.

There's Premier League representation in the form of newly promoted Romain Saiss of Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Real Madrid's Achraf Hakimi, Amine Harit (Schalke 04) and Hamza Mendyl of LOSC Lille provide an undercurrent of youngsters featuring in Europe's major leagues.

Amiens' Youssef Ait Bennasser has made the cut after recovering from a thigh injury sustained in March.

Raja Casablanca's Badr Banoun is one of three home-based players along with goalkeeper Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti and El Kaabi, although there's no placed for Mohamed Nahiri, Fouad Chafik or Jawad El Yamiq.

Morocco qualified for their first World Cup since 1998 after topping a group containing Ivory Coast, Mali and Gabon.

They begin their campaign against Iran in Saint Petersburg on June 15, before facing Portugal in Moscow five days later.

The Atlas Lions conclude their first-round campaign against Spain in Kalingrad on June 25.
