Montpellier to appoint Pascal Baills after Rolland Courbis exit

Montpellier president Louis Nicollin says he plans to appoint Pascal Baills as a replacement for departed manager Rolland Courbis based on the recommendation of Paris Saint-Germain boss Laurent Blanc.

Courbis, 62, resigned on Wednesday after just over two years in charge of the 2012 French champions.

The ex-Marseille manager led Montpellier to a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1 last season, but he had a more strained relationship with the board during the current campaign following a disastrous start in which his side failed to win any of their first seven games.

They have since recovered to lie 15th in the table at the halfway point of the season and Nicollin said that he will take the advice of former Montpellier defender Blanc when appointing a new head coach.

"The greatest French manager, Laurent Blanc, said to me one time that Pascal Baills should be given a chance," Nicollin told Eurosport. "That's what we're going to do."

Baills, 51, is a former Montpellier player who has served as assistant manager to various coaches at the club since 2004.

Nicollin, 72, said the final details still had to be cleared up but that he was happy with the idea.

"We're finding a solution with someone who knows the place perfectly," he said. "It's very good."

Meanwhile, Courbis said the "beginning of the end" of his second spell as Montpellier manager had come with the decision not to award him a new contract over the summer.

He also confirmed that a conflict with the club's medical staff had played a part in his choice to resign.

"I need to rest," Courbis told RMC. "I spent 24 tiresome months here and not six.

"There was a descent into hell stopped, a difficult close season, floods [at Montpellier's ground in October 2014] and despite everything we finished seventh.

"We also lost important players like [Remy] Cabella and [Benjamin] Stambouli. There were difficult things that made it become tiring and when it becomes tiring it's more tedious.

"In the interest of the club, it's better that the last five months are done without me."
