Sammy Ameobi joins Boro on loan
Championship side Middlesbrough have signed Sammy Ameobi on loan from Newcastle until the end of the season.
Boro's promotion push has been hit by recent poor form, with Tony Mowbray’s side picking up just one win since the turn of the year.
And Mowbray feels Ameobi - who has found game time limited at St James’ Park - will prove a welcome addition at the Riverside Stadium.
"He gives us a different option and more options in a similar way to Muzzy [Mustapha] Carayol," Mowbray said.
"He's an out-and-out attacking wide player, who can operate on either side and will be ideal when we want to play with two wingers.
“In my mind Carayol is the only player that I would class an out-and-out winger we have at the club. He [Ameobi] will hopefully give some players a lift and create some competition."
Ameobi cannot play in Boro’s FA Cup clash with Chelsea on Wednesday as he is cup-tied, although there is an agreement in place that would allow his loan deal to be extended should the club feature in the play-offs.
The England Under-21 international has made 14 appearances for the Magpies this term but failed to find the back of the net.
