Erick 'Cubo' Torres omitted from Mexico's 25-man Gold Cup squad

MEXICO CITY -- Hours prior to the 67th edition of the CONCACAF Clasico between Mexico and the United States, the Mexican Football Federation published its 25-man Gold Cup roster, which will turn into a final 23 on June 27th.

The call-up only includes three strikers in Chivas' Alan Pulido, Atlas' Martin Barragan and Morelia's Angel Sepulveda, who scored in his senior national team debut back on Sept. 3, 2016 in Mexico's visit to El Salvador in the Fourth Round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers.

The omission of Houston Dynamo's Erick "Cubo" Torres is one of the significant surprises, considering that the Mexican striker has scored 10 goals to start the new MLS campaign.

Chivas, the current Liga MX champions, provide five players -- Orbelin Pineda, Rodolfo Pizarro, Pulido, Jair Pereira and Hedgardo Marin. While the current CONCACAF Champions League title holders, Pachuca, have three of their members included in the roster -- Jorge Hernandez, Raul Lopez and Erick Gutierrez. Tigres, who lost two finals to start 2017, provide four players -- Hugo Ayala, Jorge Torres Nilo, Luis Rodriguez and Jesus Duenas.

Club America's U20 player Edson Alvarez was expected to make this roster, but he was left out after a busy season at club and U20 level. Also, he'll be joining El Tri in the Confederations Cup as an extra man to use in weekly training sessions. Alvarez and Chivas' Alejandro Mayorga have been invited by Osorio and his coaching staff to make the trip to Russia in order to gain valuable experience alongside Mexico's best available players.

The Gold Cup will take place between July 7-26 in the U.S.

Mexico's camp is scheduled to start on June 13th, here's the full list:
