Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez could break Mexico 60-goal mark - Borgetti

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- Former Mexico striker Jared Borgetti saw Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez tie him as El Tri's highest scorer last Friday in the team's 2-0 victory over Costa Rica.

Now he's backing Bayer Leverkusen's Hernandez to break the record of 46 goals in Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago and then go on to raise the bar even further.

"I think he could reach between 60 and 70 goals, without any problem," Borgetti, now an ESPN analyst Borgetti said. "He's 28, he's young and if he continues, not at the same rate, because at the end the rate can do down, but I think he can reach between 60 and 70 goals. It'd be perfect."

Hernandez scored his 46th goal for Mexico in his 89th appearance, with Borgetti accomplishing his 46 goals over exactly 89 caps.

"I can only congratulate him because 'Chicharito' has given a lot of effort, dedication and perseverance to achieve it," Borgetti said. "It is something that deserves applause and even more so because not many get the opportunity to be able to do it."

Hernandez -- Borgetti's former teammate at Chivas -- was stuck on 45 goals for almost nine months and showed the relief both in his celebration and his comments after the game.

"It helps my confidence to be level as the maximum scorer," he said. "It is something I never dreamed about or imagined, but the most important things is the result for the group."

The 28-year-old was taken off in the 66th minute of the game against Costa Rica with a thigh injury, but traveled with the team to Port of Spain and is available for Tuesday's match against Trinidad and Tobago.

El Tri currently tops the Hexagonal phase of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with seven points after three rounds of matches.
