Giovani dos Santos, Rafa Marquez headline Mexico squad to face Iceland

LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos and veteran Atlas captain Rafa Marquez were both included in a strong 23-man Mexico squad to face Iceland on Feb. 8 in Las Vegas, in El Tri's first match of 2017.

Coach Juan Carlos Osorio went largely with experience in preparation for a busy year including the Confederations Cup, Gold Cup and World Cup qualifiers, though there were first call-ups for Monterrey goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez, America defender Edson Alvarez and Atlas defender Luis Reyes.

Dos Santos is the only player in the squad not based in Mexico, as European clubs were not obliged to release their players with the friendly match falling outside of an official FIFA international date.

Striker Oribe Peralta missed out, with reports suggesting Club America didn't want to release him because of its Liga MX game against Chiapas on Feb. 7.

Another notable absence was Chivas' attacking midfielder Rodolfo Pizarro.

The squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Gonzalez (Monterrey), Jesus Corona (Cruz Azul), Alfredo Talavera (Toluca)

Defenders: Hugo Ayala (Tigres), Jorge Torres Nilo (Tigres), Marquez (Atlas), Nestor Araujo (Santos Laguna), Oswaldo Alanis (Chivas), Luis Reyes (Atlas), Raul Lopez (Pachuca), Edson Alvarez (Club America)
