Giovani dos Santos, Guillermo Ochoa omitted from Mexico squad

Interim Mexico coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti has omitted LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos and Malaga goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa from his squad to face Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina in the United States on Sept. 4 and 8, respectively.

Giovani's brother, Jonathan dos Santos, also misses out on the preparation games ahead of the Oct. 10 playoff against the United States in the Rose Bowl for a place in the Confederations Cup 2017.

No explanation was given for the surprise omission of the foreign-based trio, although Ochoa and Jonathan dos Santos, who plays for Villarreal, didn't feature for their clubs in La Liga openers last weekend.

Giovani, however, has scored twice and appeared confident in his first three MLS games, with his side winning all of them.

The bulk of the rest of the squad remains similar to those Miguel Herrera selected, with veteran Rafa Marquez returning, Carlos Vela keeping his place and Tigres trio Jorge Torres Nilo, Jesus Duenas and Javier Aquino being brought in.

Brazilian Ferretti only selected Club America's Moises Munoz and Toluca's Alfredo Talavera as goalkeepers.

Tigres coach Ferretti was presented as Mexico's interim coach on Monday and will take charge of the team for four matches, following the sudden firing of Herrera on July 28.

The 13 domestic-based players will meet up in Mexico City on Sunday, while the ten playing in Europe will join them in Salt Lake City on Monday, ahead of next Friday's friendly against Trinidad and Tobago.

The squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Moises Munoz (America), Alfredo Talavera (Toluca)

Defenders: Paul Aguilar (America), Diego Reyes (Real Sociedad), Francisco "Maza" Rodriguez (Cruz Azul), Rafa Marquez (Hellas Verona), Hector Moreno (PSV), Oswaldo Alanis (Chivas), Miguel Layun (Watford), Jorge Torres Nilo (Tigres)

Midfielders: Duenas (Tigres), Jose Juan "Gallito" Vazquez (Leon), Javier Guemez (America), Hector Herrera (Porto), Luis Montes (Leon), Javier Aquino (Tigres), Carlos Esquivel (Toluca), Andres Guardado (PSV)

Forwards: Jesus "Tecatito" Corona (Twente), Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez (Manchester United), Oribe Peralta (America), Carlos Vela (Real Sociedad), Raul Jimenez (Benfica).
